Formerly known as SR-71, the Coffeeshop Blue Sky is still kinda "stealth." Strolling down 17th Street in downtown Oakland, it's easy to mistake for a small java joint, not a place where you can purchase something to roll a joint with. From the outside, it sure doesn't look like a med-pot dispensary. Yet unlike some cannabis clubs, Blue Sky boasts friendly customer service. A neighborhood feeling prevails in this cornerstone of the "Oaksterdam" district; patients never feel unwelcome, and the staff is never too buzzed to help them get what they need for that aching back or those nagging migraines (wink wink). Line too long on a Friday evening? No problem. Just tell the staff you want "express" service, hand over your bread, and they'll expedite your transaction. Extensive research has determined that Blue Sky often carries the same strains of high-grade indicas and sativas for as much as 20-25 percent less than some of the more chi-chi bodegas. Should you get the munchies, prices are well within reason for typical cafe fare, such as lattes, carrot cakes, and muffins. The selection changes frequently, but if you find a particularly potent strain of purple, you can return the same day for more. Rather grow your own? Howzabout pre-flowered clones to get you started, or brochures outlining instructional courses at "Cannabis College" (for those with, er, green thumbs)? Most serendipitously, Blue Sky stays open later than other clubs, which is awesome if you're, ahem, perpetually tardy.
