Get to the latest dance hits before Jay-Z does

Indian Music World

For the largely immigrant community it was first set up to serve, the appeal of Indian Music World is its wide selection of DVDs, CDs, and cassette tapes in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and Punjabi. The store stocks a varied selection of mix CDs of songs taken from the latest Bollywood films and marketed under titles such as the "Pretty Lady Mix" and the "Miss Spicy Mix." In addition to movies and movie soundtracks, the shop also packs a diverse selection of other music into a small space, carrying everything from classical Indian sitar music to ghazals, current pop hits to sing-along karaoke tracks. And for those of us who may not possess the language skills necessary to follow the latest boy-meets-girl-and-her-stern-parents musical spectacular, a particularly large spread of Indian Music World's wallspace is devoted to super-danceable bhangra music and club remixes of Punjabi and Hindi music. Many of these tracks are reinterpreted by increasingly internationally renowned musicians such as Bally Sagoo and Panjabi MC -- the latter of whose crossover hit "Mundian Te Bach Ke" was rocking American dancefloors well before rapper Jay-Z gave it the remix treatment.
