In this post-modern age, people need as much distraction as possible. Thanks to Zumba, exercisers can have the million-miles-a-minute variety they need in their everyday lives; Zumba's slogan, after all, is "ditch the workout, join the party." This fitness craze started in Colombia in the 1990s but has only now caught on in the States and more than 125 other countries. It combines squats and lunges with heavy-duty salsa, mambo, and other high-cardio dances, creating a heavy-duty workout that keeps peoples' attention. Now more than 12 million people flock to weekly classes to get their Zumba fix, opting to dance instead of spin or lift. Oakland's Flying Yoga Shala offers Zumba classes four days a week at various times of the day. But their classes go beyond a workout. Select Zumba classes perform as well, such as during a halftime show at a Golden State Warriors basketball game this past January. Talk about motivation to keep you going back to class.
