10 @ 10

Bay Area music lovers are blessed with an embarrassment of noncommercial radio riches. KALX, KUSF, and KFJC provide the fresh, the local, the cutting-edge, and the way out-there; KPFA and KPIG bring the roots and world; at any time on any day, the music-curious can be surprised a half-dozen times over by turning the dial. But you know what? Sometimes there’s such a thing as too much surprise; sometimes things get a little, well, random. That’s why 10 @ 10 is such a treat. “Ten great songs from one great year,” every weekday at 10 a.m. and p.m., plus marathon sets Saturday mornings. DJ Annalisa is no AOR stooge — her playlists reflect legit crate-digging skills. A 1972 set doesn’t mean “Brandy and “American Pie” — it means rare tracks by Pink Floyd and T-Rex, “Perfect Day” by Lou Reed, and snippets from Maude and The Godfather. 1980 isn’t about “Another One Bites the Dust” or “Funkytown”; it’s about the Soft Boys, Springsteen’s “Cadillac Ranch,” and Tom Snyder facing off with John Lydon on TV. In other words, 10 @ 10 is a tiny radio time capsule, serving up surprise in bite-size portions.
