Walnut Creek — with its leafy, broad boulevards and suburban populace — is a breeding ground for angst. There's just something about the sleepy, heavenly façade that doesn't make sense — something that our primitive brains keep trying to wake up from. Over on Newell Street, next to Whole Foods and Macy's, we found solace at The Vault Smoke Shop. It carries all manner of items that church-going folk don't approve of. Ornate bongs, scientific-looking bubblers, the latest vaporizers, hookahs and accessories, and supplies. Founded in 2011, the shop's staffers handpick selections of American-made glass art from Hitman, PHX, Zob, Mobius, and more. We've spotted heady stuff from Darby Helm, Salt Glass, Snic, and Merc as well. Walnut Creek bans medical cannabis dispensaries. But combine delivery services with The Vault, and patients east of the Caldecott tunnels do just fine.
