.Best Happy Hour for the Frugal

Sliver

The recession may be (mostly) over and carbs may be out (again), but anyone who feigns indifference at the prospect of 100 PERCENT FREE PIZZA is either lying or possibly a robot. During happy hour at the newish downtown Berkeley restaurant Sliver (which is, by the way, a lovely, convivial, live-music-having place in its own right, 100 PERCENT FREE PIZZA notwithstanding), every single drink comes with, yes, a “sliver”: a (generous) half-sized slice of fresh, piping hot pizza, made sauceless and vegetarian in the style of Cheeseboard Pizza (from which many of Sliver’s staff came), and covered in a rotating-daily selection of fresh, seasonal vegetables — fresh roma tomatoes, red onions, mozzarella, Bulgarian feta, lemon zest, and cilantro, say; or cremini mushrooms, yellow onions, mozzarella, and French goat cheese. Better yet, this isn’t some kind of ploy to con you into paying for an overpriced and under-alcoholic drink: Beers start at $4, cocktails at $5, and there’s nary a watered-down “punch” in sight — just affordable, delicious booze and FREE PIZZA for as far as the eye can see (okay, 7 p.m.), which means three drinks will get you nicely drunk and fairly well-fed for about $15. Come hungry and leave your robot friends at home.
