Johansson Projects

Johansson Projects is located at the corner of 23rd and Telegraph, at the heart of Oakland's art district; look for the crowds on First Friday evenings. It may be only one year old, but this small gallery has consistently presented thoughtful, eclectic shows with a high degree of professionalism and polish, and, equally notable, a refreshing enthusiasm and absence of art attitude, in keeping with Oakland's brash, collegial Art Murmur spirit. It's an unusual and winning combination, credit for which goes to owner Kimberly Johansson, who worked in San Francisco galleries for years before going solo in the burgeoning Easy Bay scene. Art shown in this stylish space (with its permanently installed "Moss Ceiling," by Misa Inaoka) is postmodern-cool, often involving unusual methods or processes, but well crafted and visually appealing — not virtues one takes for granted these days, alas. Some examples: Jim Campbell, Jana Flynn, Lia Cook, Amanda Hughen, Michael Meyers, Nathan Lynch, Lawrence LaBianca, Ross Khalsa, Nathan Cordero, Kyle Monhollen, Paul Hayes, and Tadashi Moriyama.
