Best Flea Market/Swap Meet

Laney College Swap Meet

Much shade gets thrown on the Laney College swap, largely because you can buy stolen goods at this Sunday flea. That issue is between you and your god, but we're pretty sure that buying secondhand is still better for the global moral climate than buying britches made by babes in Bangladesh. And for every binder full of CDs that's obviously been boosted from a Honda, there's a stall full of garments from a Forever 21 whose underpaid employees "accidentally" left the back door open after closing. Besides, that's not all that's available here: The Laney College market is a perfect balance of Ashby's secondhand and vintage wares and Coliseum's new items, with a few artisanal products thrown in for good measure. A recent trip netted Prada boots, some Oakland-made olive oil, one ring, two bracelets, one pair of earrings, two coats (one Gap, one Moda International), and two CDs, all for $52 (including two people's $1 entry fees). If it's still just too seedy for you, keep in mind that most scholars agree the term "flea market" is a translation of marche aux puces, a Parisian bazaar named for the hopping parasites ensconced in the furniture sold there; so get yourself to a mall and leave us to our bargain-hunting, please.
