Oh, irony. You are a bottomless well of inspiration for fashionistas. The trucker hat. The '80s concert T. The ham-sized belt buckle. All of them say: Ha-hah, no self-respecting coolie would actually wear such a thing, expect for moi, whose coolness is an ironic allusion to dorkiness, which is actually an acknowledgment of my coolness. (Hurts to follow, doesn't it?) Now come the oversized sunglasses, the ones that even Jackie O would pass off as hyperbolic. At first, they were viewed as yet another play on irony, another accessory that figured into the Kurt Cobain dork-equals-cool calculus. But in the past few months, they've grown on us. They hide the windows to the soul quite magnificently. They provide mystery to the wearer, that very thing Jackie O wore so well. So for now, we praise oversized sunglasses as the best fashion trend.
