Longs Drugs aka CVS/pharmacy
On late nights, when you find yourself wandering the streets of
Oakland, pondering the meaning of life and mulling over your own
personal dilemmas, sometimes the only answer comes in the form of a
24-hour drugstore. Lucky for you there's Longs Drugs in North Oakland,
commonly referred to as "Big Longs" or "Super Longs." Actually, as of
this year it became a CVS/pharmacy, along with a slew of Longs stores
throughout California, but somehow "Big CVS/pharmacy" just doesn't have
that same endearing ring. There's comfort in knowing that at any time
of day or night you can trek up Broadway or 51st Street toward the
drugstore's warm glow. And it's surprisingly therapeutic to wander its
many aisles, browsing the endless supply of household products and
feeling the unabashed freedom and relief of never having to leave.
Sadly, it looks like the friendly giant may be going from 24-hour to
zero. In a flier distributed to homes in Rockridge, Safeway announced
plans to demolish the 90,000 square-foot store and put in a new
high-end Safeway, while CVS/pharmacy is apparently in negotiations with
the shopping center to construct a new 12,000- to 13,000-square-foot
pharmacy. The days of eating a Top Dog in the shade of the garden
center may be limited, so visit while you still can.
