Kingman's Ivy Room

Albany’s smooth, living-room-style cocktail lounge is an unlikely place to seek out underground music, but most Mondays and some Tuesdays, the Ivy Room hosts free concerts of creative jazz, lo-fi rock, and improvised music. Bands like Oakland psych-rockers Clipd Beaks alternate with Mills College MFAs like Aram Shelton, Jordan Glenn, and Karl A.D. Evangelista performing right on the lounge’s carpeted floor (there is no stage). Lucio Menegon began the musical infusion with the support of bartender Eric Leppo in July 2008. He expected his Ivy Room Improv/Experimental Hootenanny & Social Club to be short-lived; instead, the monthly series thrived and attracted other underground music organizers to book the month’s remaining Mondays. There is never a cover charge, and it’s a good excuse to bring yourself into the vicinity of Zachary’s Pizza. Kick back on a posh couch and enjoy the perplexity of the regulars — and yourself — as to why this is happening here.
