.Best Corner Book Shop in the Town

Laurel Book Store, the independent shop located Downtown Oakland’s historic and distinctly shaped Lion J. Wilson building, is a prominent East Bay stop for authors on national book tours, and a fine place to purchase any book you’d like. But the store’s standout features are anchored by owner Luan Stauss, who hoists a special flag for local authors. On March 24, Oakland author Glori Simmons will read from the nine seductive and fearlessly heartbreaking stories in Suffering Fools. On March 25, Mills College graduate and Oakland native Kamaria Lofton will take kids on a highflying ride with My City is Oakland, the first book in a series of seven children’s books celebrating her hometown. To keep up to do date with events at the bookstore, check its calendar, or wander in if you find yourself in the area. Expect April 29 to be a hootenanny: Independent Bookstore Day is all day — with special sales, local author appearances, and treats!

Friday March 24, 7pm, and Saturday, March 25, 2pm, Free. 1423 Broadway, Oakland, LaurelBookstore.com.
