If owner Tim “Timber” Manhart had opened up Catahoula Coffee Company & Roastery in Berkeley or Oakland, it would’ve just been another pour-over cafe. But because it’s in Richmond, Catahoula bears the distinction of being the only coffee shop of its kind in town. It’s best known as a gathering spot for locals to sip strongly brewed coffee and espresso drinks. And the beans are top-notch: Catahoula’s house-roasted blends are now available at Monterey Market and Berkeley Bowl. In keeping with its small business ethic, the cafe hosts farmers’ markets and music performances, and recently committed to buying all of its energy from renewable sources. And if you catch Manhart at the counter, he will no doubt engage you in a name game until you land on a friend, neighbor, or former co-worker you have in common — all while demonstrating his new favorite coffee-brewing technology. So breathe in the smell of roasting beans, sample the latest brew, and stay a while.
