Deemed “The Cat Man of West Oakland” by the Express, Adam Myatt proudly accepts the fact that his love of cats is as notable as his electro-pop band James & Evander. The 26-year-old musician started photographing feral cats in his West Oakland neighborhood a few years ago, but Instagram and a successful Kickstarter campaign helped put his so-called “hoodcats” — Dumpster-diving, fur-tangled, world-weary street cats of the Heathcliff variety — on the map. Last year, Myatt raised nearly $1,500 on Kickstarter to produce a 2013 calendar, and its 125 copies quickly sold out. Myatt is planning a 2014 calendar (and promises he’ll make more copies), for which he’s collecting photos daily on his Instagram account, @CatManOfWestOakland. His “catman” duties have even extended to helping local nonprofit Cat Town Oakland place cats in permanent and foster homes, and acting as the official DJ for the first Oakland Internet Cat Video Festival.
