Benik Abovian is one of the greatest living Armenian traditional musicians. Both he and Zaven Azibekian play all of the important winds native to Armenia, including the oboe-like zurna and a couple of types of recorder. Here they split lead duties, though they don't play together, while other musicians accompany on drone and percussion instruments. This music has an edge, but also a profound melodic grace that should make it relatively accessible for nonspecialists. Listeners already familiar with Armenian music will be ecstatic with this great release.
