A daily throng of lanky, unshaven guys and stroller-wielding moms have made this cramped corner bakery the center of life in Temescal, and no wonder. With an electric-blue frightwig and a sunny disposition, Bakesale Betty (aka Alison Barakat, a Chez Panisse alum) bakes up perfect ginger cookies, Australian sticky date pudding capable of inducing ecstatic sugar-shock, and what may be the tenderest scones on the planet. Slaw-blanketed fried chicken sandwiches (available 11 a.m.-2 p.m.) are the stuff of neighborhood legend.

Hours: 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Tue.-Sat.
