In Appaloosa, Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen play mercenary lawmen hired by the violent titular town to put an end to the criminal reign of rancher Randall Bragg (Jeremy Irons). Bragg, however, turns out to be not nearly as big of a challenge as new-in-town Allison French (Rene Zellweger), a gentlewoman who gets around more than the hooker's soon-to-be fianc Virgil (Harris) has known. Harris, who co-wrote and directed, has all the ingredients of a great Western, but allows his characters to spend too much of their time sitting or standing around in saloons or on porches. Most of the movie is spent waiting for something. There are explosive moments to be remembered, for sure, but it's too much of a slog getting to them (114 min.).
