Aoife O'Donovan

When: Wed., July 3, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $20.50, $22.50
Aoife O’Donovan was the lead singer and principal songwriter of celebrated alternative bluegrass band Crooked Still for ten years. After Crooked Still went on hiatus in early 2012, O’Donovan collaborated with a diverse range of musicians, including progressive bluegrass band Punch Brothers, indie folk duo The Milk Carton Kids, and Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer, and Stuart Duncan on the Grammy-Award winning Goat Rodeo Sessions album. Her debut solo album confirms she’s a capable talent on her own. Fossils (which was produced by Tucker Martine, whose credits include The Decemberists and My Morning Jacket) has earned significant praise from The New York Times and American Songwriter since it was released on June 11. The album weaves strands of folk, bluegrass, and country rock into a rich, soulful tapestry. O’Donovan’s voice raises her above the female singer-songwriter fray: It’s measured and confident, soaring over what otherwise might just be considered pleasant listening. Catch her at Freight & Salvage (2020 Addison St., Berkeley). With High Sierra.
