Aerial Firefighting in California

When: Feb. 9-June 1 2008
Price: $6-$14

There's at least one kind of bomber pilot that almost all of us can agree to appreciate: firebomber pilots, who fight wilderness fires from high in the air. From fourteen air-attack and nine "helitack" bases statewide, these fliers can reach most fires within twenty minutes. On Saturday, Feb. 9, the USS Hornet Museum (707 W. Hornet Ave., Pier 3, Alameda) unveils "Aerial Firefighting in California," a new exhibit honoring these aviators. Alongside actual firefighting planes (such as the TBM Avengerfirebomber) and other artifacts, many aerial firefighters will be on hand for the grand opening at 1 p.m. $6-$14. USS-Hornet.org
