Adelle Waldman

When: Fri., May 16, 7 p.m. 2014
If one of the great pleasures of a good book is being transported to a different time and place, it should be noted that The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P., Adelle Waldman’s simmering, sharp-eyed debut novel, does none of that. Rather, Nathaniel P.’s triumph is in its exquisite, sometime cutting characterization of an archetype we all know well: the sensitive young literary man of post-millennial brownstone Brooklyn (which, to be clear, could easily be Oakland with a few cosmetic tweaks). Waldman’s title character agonizes about everything and can commit to nothing; despite its title, the book is devoted not to a passionate love affair but to the sort of tentative romance that’s ripe for a comedy of manners like this one. Waldman reads this weekend at A Great Good Place for Books (6120 La Salle Ave., Oakland).
