It's difficult to believe that director Julie Taymor shares no immediate genetic link with Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge), but apparently their mutual flair for treating the big screen like an impressionist (or even surrealist) painter's canvas, is nothing more than coincidental evolution between two artists. In Across the Universe, Taymor proves she's almost as good at it, too. Inspired by the Beatles' music and featuring a slew of covers by folks like Bono, the pop-musical trails two teenagers, appropriately named Lucy and Jude, who fall in love during the tumultuous '60s. It's too bad that's it, since, with so much sincerity put into the beautiful production, it becomes quickly frustrating that there's not more substance to it all.
Sorry there are no upcoming showtimes for Across the Universe
