A Mississippi-Bay Area Mind Expansive Guitar Celebration

When: Fri., Aug. 2, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $15-$20
Although not billed as a South Memphis String Band gig, three of the pickers participating in A Mississippi-Bay Area Mind Expansive Guitar Celebration — North Mississippi Allstars’ leader Luther Dickinson, Jimbo Mathus of The Squirrel Nut Zippers, and Oakland-born bluesman Alvin Youngblood Hart — are principals of that acoustic quartet. The band’s repertoire constitutes a slyly subversive plea for racial reconciliation in the form of old-time, politically incorrect ditties: There’s Hart, the group’s only African-American member, singing lyrics such as: Yonder come a darkie with his overalls on, just a-fightin’ about them turnip greens; the anti-slavery anthem “Oh, Freedom”; and Mathus’ tale of visiting the Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. monuments and singing “Bourgeois Blues,” Lead Belly’s protest against racism and classism, in front of The White House. The three are joined at Brick & Mortar Music Hall (1710 Mission St., San Francisco) by Robbie Basho disciple Richard Osborn and Andy Cabic of the band Vetiver.
