A few months ago, the following Chowhound discussion header caught my eye: “Best Bay Area high tea? In a museum in Oakland!” The poster, “jaiko,” raved about crustless, open-face finger sandwiches and warm hospitality — as though s/he’d been invited over by “a group of good cooks [who] were in friendly competition to see who could produce the best ‘goodies’ that day.” By the time I’d read there were lemon curd tartlets to be had, I knew further investigation was in order.

Rising from the (depressing) ashes of Sweet Jimmie's at 311 Broadway is the Night Light, founded by Ruby Room, Radio, and Kitty's alums John Nackley and Doug Kinsey, and set to grand-open tonight. It's a dark, Forties-inspired, vaguely libraryish (in a good way) little place, with velvet wallpaper, tons of dark wood, and gorgeous chandeliers; I went there last night and it's pretty great.…

Apparently, something in the air of the show at the Independent Friday night made it particularly easy to overshare — in fact, it seemed impossible not to. Memorable moments from this year's benchmark festival, for those who missed it. by Ellen Cushing, Kathleen Richards and Rachel Swan Few would debate that this year was a benchmark for Outside Lands, in everything from the lineup, to the layout, to the Burning Man art, to the sorta bizarre Barbary stage (which was mostly reserved for magicians and comedians), to the marketing. Even small perturbations like Big Boi's imitation of a Phillip Glass performance (just kidding) and the Friday night fog (which cleared by Saturday) couldn't hamper San Francisco's largest and most ambitious music festival.…

About ten years have passed since I first stumbled upon Anders Nilsen’s Big Questions series in a little indie gift shop in Providence, Rhode Island. The comics were just these thin, xeroxed booklets back then, and the drawings could hardly have been more simple: two small birds in a panel, a curved line to mark the horizon.

Nilsen says he didn’t take drawing comics too seriously in those early days — saw them as more of a relief from the elaborate paintings and installation work he was doing at the time.…
