I became an RN to be apart of the community and as an RN I am an advocate for my patients many of whom cannot be their own advocates.
California Nurses Association was the 1st RN union to set patient to RN ratio’s in the world. Theses standards are now being recognized across the nation. I mention this as an example of the RN’s and Union’s focus - safety.
It is unfortunate that C.Watts is mis-informed regarding the number of assignment objection letters (ADO's) that we have filed and that he is unwilling to listen to those who are the eyes and ears of the hospital – the Nurses. He is in denial or is misled by the mid-management of his hospital. These objection letters are used to point out a problem so that we don't repeat them in the future. I write them, not to point a finger, but in an attempt to make our healthcare system the best it can be, and avoid future calamity.
I recently worked a shift in which 2 floors of the hospital were under-staffed. I asked the Assistant manager to staff us appropriately. He said that he would like to but could not- that essentially, his hands are tied, and that his requests for additional staff are ignored by his superiors.
I am often asked to work overtime, extra shifts sometimes in dangerous situations.
My hope is that the community will read this and not only agree that the RN’s are fighting for justice but that the community will stand beside us and help us demand what is right - SAFE STAFFING NOW!
