Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
How can I say this without sounding trite? When a neighborhood is upturned by gentrification, people are displaced, which leads to a sense of rootlessness. This is the history of the growth of this country -- first the original people were killed or removed at gunpoint by the government, the land sold off to settlers or corporations, and now it's happening again, only it's African Americans being displaced. It may not be at gunpoint this time (for the most part), but it's still destroying a community.
