Re: “Oakland Housing Rights Activists Face 8.5 Years in Prison

America was founded by white male landowners with guns. DeCaprio and others have challenged the status quo of how property ownership is transferred and maintained and the System is 'freaking out.' Of course, this same System had done nothing about the empty houses that were rotting from abandonment….

It's sad that the System can't even come up with a more constructive way to deal with this than to bring out the instruments of societal punishment. It's like silencing your child who is crying from hunger by hitting them with a baseball bat.

Re: “The Oakland Fence Saga

Been doing permits and helping people with code violations for 15years. I know how building departments work and am not surprised that you are having these difficulties. While the procedures of building departments are weird, they are fairly common from city to city so you either have to work within their M.O. or you are often fighting a much much bigger battle than you realise. (for example, the fact that the onus is on you to prove where your property line is. this has always struck me as odd but it's common practice nationwide now.)

Re: “Updated: Oakland Spent $72K Closing 162 Homeless Camps in 2015

Leave the homeless alone! It's difficult to get back on your feet if the City is constantly sweeping them out from underneath you. Getting rid of the homeless is like trying to get rid of drugs or prostitution. It's the shadow side of life that makes some people uncomfortable to look at, but the harder you work to hide it, the bigger it gets. Instead, we should be asking ourselves why these phenomenon exist in the first place, and what about our society's values and modus operandii fosters their existence? Peace! At the very least, if they're not causing any problem, let the people be.

Re: “Oakland's Toxic Failure

I'm very glad that this article was written, but the glaring omission from the article is: why does the City of Oakland have so much hazardous waste to deal with in the first place? Where are these toxins coming from and what are they doing being stored in a populated area? Are they collected from households, are they products ordered by the City of Oakland with out tax money, and then not fully utilized? Are they products of commerce and industry?

Re: “Berkeley Defends Sanctuary Status

Immigration policies and extreme restrictions placed upon movement of people tears apart love relationships and divides families. The concept of 'nation' is artificial and divides us. Anything that reduces these restrictions and promotes kindness and connection among all peoples on this Earth has my vote. It is, in fact, the only way that we will survive this current Earth crisis with any degree of success.

Re: “Atrazine Feminizes Male Frogs

Awesome article! Now, can someone translate this to Spanish so I can bring this to my local taqueria? I adore Mexican food, but finding non-GMO tamales and tortillas in local taquerias is near impossible…thank you!

Re: “Bad Air? There's a Pill for That

Oh great! Another way that we can avoid taking responsibility for the air pollution that we are creating! American adults do LOVE avoiding responsibility. It's our 'right!' After all, America was founded with a 'Bill of Rights,' but no 'Bill of Responsibilities'... Important article topic and good research, but it does sort of ignore the bigger picture and all the OTHER health and environment impacts of air pollution generators. For example, an nicotine addict suffers from far more than just lung contamination….
