Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
I grew up on the peninsula in the 60's and 70's. Even then, we always knew that the Oakland flats were filled with crime. My late aunt lived in the flats and I'm sorry to say that she and other family members were actually part of the crime scene there. I didn't know this until those relatives were long dead and gone. My point is that the level of crime that exists in Oakland has developed over many decades and I believe has never been addressed by the City very well. That's not to say that Jerry Brown didn't try. Now, it's a cancer that is agressive and is moving to other parts of the body that were previously untouched by it. With this final comment, most will immediately write my comments off, but I had read an interview of a faith based community leader in Oakland and his comments came from years of trying to drill down into the problems there with very little or no other help from the community. He saw the problem as having been caused by the distruction of family values and absolutely no belief in God. And yes, most will write these comment off, but what do you think happens when the olg grandma's that tore your behind up when you messed up became the seasoned criminals in those areas, and too few in the church had the integrity to stand up for what is right, what do you expect? Got any better ideas? From what I've read in the previous comments, everything else has been tried. Bring back family values and a respect for God. I know, nobody want either of those either.
