@andrew your comment is an excellent example of the argumentative fallacy that we in the biz (of fallacy id'ing? i'm not really part of any "biz") call "post hoc, ergo propter hoc" - "after this, therefore because of this." crime rates fell in nyc after bratton's aggresive stop and frisk campaign, but it doesn't necessarily follow that bratton's campaign had a causal relationship to this drop in crime. it may have been entirely responsible, it may have been partially responsible, it may have had no effect, or it may have actually served as an impediment that some more powerful force had to overcome in order to effect a drop in nyc crime. the fact that crime rates fell in other cities that did not practice stop and frisk during that same indicates at the very least that stop and frisk is not the only (or even most effective) way for a city to reduce crime.
