Re: “Oakland Firefighters Say Their Department Is So Badly Managed, Ghost Ship Warehouse Wasn't Even In Its Inspection Database

Let's get rid of this ineffectual, unqualified fire chief already. Surely we can afford to fully staff the fire department/fire marshall's office if we are throwing money at a sports team? Where are people's priorities? I'm inclined to agree with the commenter who said we need to return to the strong city manager/weak mayor form of government, because no Oakland mayor since Jerry Brown has been any good. SOMEONE needs to clean up the corruption and put the money where it will do the most good, and that someone is not likely to be a politician.

Re: “Oakland to Vote on $350 Million Public Subsidy for New $1.3 Billion Raiders Stadium This Tuesday

NOT ONE DIME for the Raiders. Fund the Public Works Department instead! Unlike City Council, PW actually does something useful. Use "surplus" public land to provide housing for middle income people, and keep building until rents become reasonable again. Oakland streets ruin cars and kill bicyclists and pedestrians; our median strips feature dead bushes, weeds, and garbage. The homeless are forced to camp under overpasses, with zero city amenities provided. Trees have not been trimmed in years, and some parks have had little or no attention for just as long. OPD tells us to "download a report," and complains of understaffing while apparently staffed sufficiently to abuse its authority. We need City Government to focus on providing BASIC CITY SERVICES. Let the Raiders go.

Re: “Vote With Us! The East Bay Express' Endorsements for Election Day 2016

I'm voting for Zakhary Mallet precisely because he was not afraid to expose the political motives that dictated the route of BART's proposed San Jose extension. Bad transportation. I also want a BART director who will rein in the overblown salaries and benefits of BART employees, who get free or almost free family health coverage no matter ther family size. When BART personnel were finally required to pay into their pensions, they got a wage increase of exactly that amount, defeating the purpose. This wage stuff needs to be addressed, and Lateefah Simon is establishment politics as usual, based on her endorsements.

Re: “Oakland School District Unveils Plans for New Headquarters — Possibly in Kaiser Auditorium

No. OUSD can renovate its current headquarters, which it should have begun after the "flood," instead of waiting 3-4 years. In fact, OUSD should have repaired whatever caused the flood, preventing the flood in the first place. OUSD should keep the land its current/former headquarters is on, and no swap. AND, we are voting "no" on OUSD's ballot measure asking for MORE money while it fritters away time and taxpayer money on this extravagance instead of pinching pennies and focusing on educating Oakland's kids.

Re: “Oakland Sergeant Says Police Chief, Mayor Retaliated Against Him For Investigating Cop Who May Have Killed Wife

If Alameda County DA refused to prosecute Riders misconduct, no wonder she is only prosecuting low-level cops in current sex scandal.

Mr. Johnson, you said it all. Thank you.

Re: “New Lawsuit Alleges Oakland Police Conspiracy to Cover Up Home Invasion by Drunk Cops

OPD has been corrupt for YEARS, before and during federal oversight, and there's no end in sight. Officers have admitted to conspiracies UNDER OATH, lied in court under oath repeatedly for years, and never been prosecuted for any of it. DA has solicited and depended upon OPD perjury for YEARS. No one at the city or county level is ever going to prosecute OPD for any of this, and for more than 10 years the state has done nothing either.
