Re: “Black Oakland Police Officers Slam Schaaf over OPD Texting, Human Trafficking Scandals

The Oakland city administrator's plan to contain the OPD scandal by going after the whistle blowers reeks of desperation. Schaaf reportedly was not concerned about years of OPD misconduct until scandal erupted on her watch, and Landreth's plan guarantees that OPD misconduct will continue. We need an INDEPENDENT police commission: the city council is inept and often laughable, and Brooks and McElhaney have reportedly committed official misconduct themselves.

Re: “The Real Reason Why Oakland's Police Chief Was Fired

Thing is, the EBE is the only paper doing journalism in our town.

Re: “Oakland Debates Best Way to Watch Over Its Police Department

Interesting. It would probably be a lot easier to influence just one director - oh, excuse me, "independent police monitor" (snort) - than an entire police commission. For window dressing, and to make this setup look legit, add a bunch of commissioners with no real power, who get appointed by the mayor and city counsel, and get tutored by the police. Sounds like business as usual in Oakland, doesn't it. Cozy.

Re: “Oakland Official Handling Coal Controversy Personally Invested in Fossil Fuels

Wait a minute, Oakland has chosen someone with a built-in HUGE conflict of interest to determine city policy on an important public issue: whether Oakland should build a terminal to ship coal from the Port of Oakland? Where have I seen this before? This is ringing a bell .... Oh! Oakland ALWAYS operates this way! Probably those who chose Cappio for this job had these same conflicts of interest. That is how Oakland operates. Kinda like the Mob.

Re: “Oakland Hotel Approved Despite Minimum Wage Violations

Oakland City Council has a very hard time getting anything right, regardless of these small donations to their political campaigns by the various entities involved in this hotel dispute. Of course the Patels should not be approved for another hotel when they are violating the law at the hotels they already operate. Whether that is something Planning & Zoning was "allowed" to consider or whether the City Council should have considered it separately from the P&Z report, obviously the Patels' track record should have been considered. If they are prominent politically, their track record should have been considered to avoid the appearance of favoritism. Their application should be denied. Let a more reputable investor build the hotel instead.

Re: “Progressive Coalition Forms in Oakland to Campaign for Three Ballot Initiatives

I'm going to support these initiatives to improve life in Oakland too. I'd be a fool to trust Oakland city government on anything, given Oakland's track record.

Re: “Trapped Part Two: The Vicious Cycle of Trauma

The two in-depth articles on the California parole board illustrate mental problems, not of the inmates seeking parole but of parole board members. I'm no mental health professional, but I see cruelty and sadism in the actions of the board members toward the inmates during the hearings. Their "reasons" are nothing more than excuses for their own sick behavior. They also exhibit the same range of attitudes - smug, self-satisfied, judgmental and unreasonable - that I have seen in criminal court from DAs, judges and even bailiffs, treating inmates and their friends and families with contempt in the courtroom.
