Re: “Why Oakland Needs a Federal Gun Control Law

The Federal Ban actually had little effect on gun sales, it was cosmetic only. In 2011 600,000 guns were sold in CA, and in 2003 it was "only" 300,000. In most parts of the state, violent crime has shot way down, despite the state having literally an explosion of new guns. Oakland already has the strongest gun control laws in CA, and zero gun shops. I know, I was the person who shut down the last one, it was called "AK Industries," and was apparently being operated illegally by two retired OPD officers. It did not sell any guns in Oakland that I am aware of, but was operating in contravention of local laws.

There is simply no correlation between gun laws and violence. I know that is hard for some to understand, but it is true. What happens in areas that have extreme gun laws is that the balance of power shifts away from citizens being armed, to only the police and criminals being armed.

Another thing is that the very first modern gun control law was purely political. It was called the Mulford Act, and was designed to quell free speech by the Black Panthers. Google it. It was signed by a Republican. If you trust the police, and if you trust criminals, then by all means, outlaw guns.
