The Figueroa incident is disgraceful - concealing exculpatory evidence on the termination of Officer Franks. He should have been fired for that along with anyone else involved.
I probably like Sean Whent more than most people with an OPD background. I have had a lot of conversations with him over the years and I believe that he is a fundamentally good person with good intentions. I think he is better than people realize and I hope that he will surprise some people. He is certainly an upgrade over Tucker, Batts, Jordan & Toribio.
As a retired OPD lieutenant, it hurts me to see Sergeant Gonzales dragged through the mud and characterized as a "lightening rod" for critics of OPD. It is true that he is deeply admired and respected throughout all ranks of the OPD. However, it isn't because he has been involved in multiple shootings. It is because he is a fine person who is also a courageous, highly skilled and professional cop. He represents what is "best" about OPD - not what is "wrong" with OPD. Too bad that his career hasn't been captured on video - if it had, you would be holding him out as an ideal for other cops to be measured against. He truly is one of the best of the best, worthy of your praise and admiration, not your misguided scorn.
Nice indictment of Jordan. How long can he continue to avoid being held accountable as a poor deputy chief, assistant chief, acting chief and chief of police? He has been at the top for many years, but, it is always someone else taking the blame. In his defense, he is not very bright and he is an ego-maniac, so, he never really had a chance.
