Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
I just found out I now have no polling place and it makes me angry that I have been automatically designated as an Absentee Voter without knowing it. It makes me angry that precincts made up of mostly low-income and people of color have, once again, been disenfranchised from voting, have, once again, disproportionately more hurdles to cross in order to cast a ballot. I personally don't know if I'll be able to manage to vote; I'm going to try, but I may have done what Rachel Reynolds did - throw away the mail ballot - or I may not have received it. And now I have to choose between casting a PROVISIONAL ballot in another precinct where they could very well screw up my ballot/s because they are not "familiar enough", or trying to find the time during their Hours of Operation to actually find and travel to the Registrar of Voters Office (I work FULL-TIME PLUS in East Oakland so it is doubtful I'll be able to do this). In this bay area, where things are supposedly more progressive and democratic, we should be ashamed of ourselves. In areas where not many people are registered to vote, we are punishing people who ARE registered? Oaktown, this needs to change. This is not democracy. I want my Polling Place back.
