Re: “Some Say Alameda County's New Green Energy Plan Isn't Green Enough

We can and should get far more than 10% of our electricity from local renewables versus relying on remote centralized solar arrays which are usually located in fragile desert ecosystems and which lose a significant amount of electricity in transmission. But even more important is that the program prioritize demand reduction and energy efficiency -- the fastest, cheapest, cleanest form of electricity is the electricity you don't consume!

Re: “Buying Support for Coal

This article explains a lot. I was wondering why all the pastors were at the hearing speaking in favor of the project when I would have expected them to oppose it given how harmful it will be to their members. I don't share Beveridge's hesitation to call this a bribe.

Re: “The Dark Side of Amazon

I'm so thankful to Jim Hightower and The EB Express for exposing this modern-day robber baron. I will NEVER shop at Amazon again. Apologists (see comments below) for Amazon's malfeasance should put themselves in the shoes of Amazon workers and small local business owners. Shameful!

Re: “Electricity May Go Green and Local

Thanks for covering the exciting news out of Alameda County. One correction: AB 2145, the Utility Power Grab of 2014, wouldn't "reform" Community Choice, it would destroy it by making it impossible for Community Choice programs to enroll new customers. If East Bay residents want a choice other than PG&E, they should contact their Senator and tell her to VOTE NO on AB 2145. You can learn more at www.no2145.org.

Re: “Unfounded Fears

Is Jesse Arreguin the last compassionate leader in Berkeley? He's the only person quoted in this article who sees homeless people as human beings with needs, not convenient scapegoats for complex social and economic problems.

I don't think most homeless people have made a lifestyle choice or any choice at all to camp out on the street. Had the journalist interviewed more than one homeless person, she might have come away with a different understanding of the causes of homelessness.

And incidentally, I've lived near downtown Berkeley for 16 years and have never been hassled by homeless people. Sure I've been panhandled a lot but it certainly doesn't deter me from shopping or dining. (Venus is one of my favorite restaurants). It just makes me sad for the panhandler--that's all, not scared, not angry, not victimized, not disgusted. Just sad. Shoppers aren't the victims in this social tragedy.
