Re: “In Oakland, Too, Fast Food Is Going Loco’l

Would be great to consider schools as pretty obvious "deserts" (with a BK or McDs nearby) and access school kitchens, set up or partner with some of the produce happenings on campus and have farm stands print recipes of the food that Choi, et al will be serving. Thanks for the endeavor and making slow food for all happen!

Re: “The Future of First Fridays

This article posits negative uncertainty on the future of a local, art-based economy in and for Oakland. The cultural phenomenon that was born out of Mama Buzz WILL continue and grow, maybe not just in size, but with the best opportunity for re-defining a sharing economy based on innovation, sustainable business incubation and the continued growth for creating good livelihoods (not just living wage 'jobs'). Traffic and multi-modal safety issues aside (because these are manageable issues), the 'flavor' of what IS so unique and so Oakland will prevail given the vision and will of all those involved who remain focused on positive solutions. Last night the 25th Street Collective hosted nearly 50 "nano-enterprisers" interested in the food (and agriculture) industry who are simply seeking information and guidance on how to grow their businesses while coming into compliance. Our next workshop will be a class to obtain the Food Handlers Certificate to ensure that there is public safety as far as yummy food is concerned. We look forward to Oakland stories that outline positive visions and solutions and not just fear perpetuating reporting. -Hiroko Kurihara, founder 25th St. Collective
