Nice! We always make our own chutney, so much better!
Sounds like a great idea and/or fun time! As a proprietor of a soon-to-be brick and mortar restaurant, I can't help but wonder how it's fair competition when these meetings don't have to bother getting all the licenses that a legitimate business, or approval from county health inspectors is fair? All of these business expenses add up to a lot of money and not all restaurants are owned by multinational LLC's with endless pockets. I'm sure that all of the underground dining venue's practice the strictest of health practices, no one wants anyone to get sick, but I can't help but think it puts a lot of us mom-n-pop restaurants at a distinct disadvantage...
But I'm sure these are only isolated incidence(s) and we're paying a majority of OPD retires large pensions for a job well done...
Meanwhile as a business owner in Oakland. The city is breathing down all of our collective necks to make damn sure all of our ducks are in a row, just as OPD and the city are a JOKE! What a bunch of screwed up priorities in this city...
Mobile food vendors are screwing local brick n' mortar businesses, how is that OK?!?!? Businesses that pay (or lease) property have to pay property taxes and they will be hit hardest because landlords aren't bringing lease prices down. This is going to lead to even greater retail vacancy than we already have to a wasteland of vacant buildings in Oakland. Short-sighted city officials have no clue what they are doing. Food trucks are great in an environment where there is no room for more businesses because all of the commercial space is taken. What the city should be doing is working harder with property companies and landlords to get the commercial vacancy rate down in Oakland. Anyone who's looked at leasing property here can tell you that the commercial lease rates are horribly out of whack for the properties being offered.
Next time how about an article about a great up-and-coming local east-bay DJ/artist/venue? Rather than an article telling people what some of us (oldschool fans) have known for some time. It's always better to give props and maybe help someone who deserves it the press they deserve, rather than gripe about someone who's past their prime...
Re: “No More Cops Without More Cuts”
Pensions for retired police and fire need to be addressed if Oaklands budget problems are ever going to be solved. Overly generous retirement benefits have been a bigger drain on our governmental services than just about any other cost on the books.
