Re: “The SFJAZZ Center and the Rise of the Nonprofit Model

Thanks for that angle on philanthropy from the musician's perspective, Ian, and the discussion on the 'academization of jazz' that followed. Great to see the community's responses to these issues/trends.

Re: “UPDATED: FINAL RESULTS: COUNTING COMPLETED; MEASURE B1 LOSES IN VERY CLOSE VOTE; BERKELEY MEASURE T ALSO DEFEATED

Also, I would LOVE it if Richmond City Council were too close to call & Eduardo Martinez still had a shot. But that's Contra Costa County. What are the numbers on uncounted absentee ballots there?

Ack-- residual absentee ballots! And here I was celebrating that my vote was one of the 26 that defeated Measure T in Berkeley.. Fingers crossed that S & T don't make it!

Re: “Big Oil Targets Little Richmond, Again

The Times endorsed Bell because he "went through the fiscal crisis of nearly a decade ago and should be well-grounded to attack the next difficult challenge," rather than endorsing the progressive candidates working closely with Mayor McLaughlin, the mayor who led the city as it "climbed up from the bottom of the hole." (CCT doesn't even credit McLaughlin.)

Thanks for shedding some light on the real work the RPA has done and offering some 'facts' on Gary Bell that Chevron won't be printing on glossy flyers.

Overall, I find this to be a well-balanced piece, and am pleased to see EBX covering this news!

Re: “The Beast Crawl

Thanks for the write-up! Hope to see everyone at PHOTO gallery for the second leg -- I'll be opening the show with a story about Back to the Future, being a teen, and high-intensity ignoring at 6:30 sharp!

Re: “Review: Jeff Mangum Steps Out at the Fox Theater

This is a great review! After the show, I kept thinking about how to put the experience into words and couldn't figure it out. It felt so much like I was listening to my original Aeroplane over the Sea tape at home, singing along or trying to follow on the guitar.

I had to keep telling myself this was different: Mangum was right there, the person who wrote the words. We were singing with HIM, not with a tape. And everyone all around was foot-stomping-and-belting and that was half the revelry of the show.

I didn't think about how meaningful it was that Mangum was able to recreate the songs so exactly, after so many years.. and he did it for us. You're right; it didn't matter if he was happy (someone asked him, but i couldn't make out his mumbled answer) or if he loved us. Because we were. And we did.
