VTA, SamTrans, WestCat, County Connection run Gilligs, a lot of MUNI and most METRO (Los Angeles) busses are Gilligs. This was a no brainer but the crooks in the GO and the incompetents on the board refused to listen to the drivers, mechanics and passengers because the simply have no idea of what is needed to provide economical reliable bus service.
I agree 100% about the low floor buses...the ride like the tires are filled with concrete. Oddly enough, even the senior/handicapped passengers prefer them to the Van Hools even though they are a bit harder to board. I would be that the high-floor Gillig Phantom would even be cheaper than the low floor models. And I hope to GOD we get plain plastic seats like in the NABI buses. They are more comfortable the the upholstered seats and the last forever and stay clean. And, they don't need to be recovered every year or less like in the VanHools......I wonder how much THAT is costing AC?
The only way to never find ourselves in this situation again is to clean house. Vote EVERYONE off the board and start fresh. Make sure that the new board will listen to the operators and mechanics as to what works and what doesn't because we're the only people who actually KNOW anything. For example, Chris Peeples STILL thinks the wheelchair lift/ramp in the middle of the bus is a good idea even though you can't find ONE operator who agrees with that.
