Laura what is your problem. Over 1500 people were shot in Oakland last year alone. I live there. My family lives there. Are you implying that every Oaklander whether a gang banger or normal citizen can not be a victim because of where they live? Is it not troubling that the Gun lobby has hobbled the ATF from creating data that may be useful in crafting real world legislation...Or are you content with the status quo? If it doesn't affect you then it doesn't matter?
Unions may have spent 85 Million but what I want to know is how much did Corporate sponsored PACs and Super PACs give.
Sounds like the OPD needs their own version of Serpico.
If this guy is so good why not fire the police chief and hire him. Why spend the extra money on a non-effective police chief? Really Quan needs to get her house in order.
What people do not realize when talking about a Union's due's being spent on political campaigns is that the money is being spent to help the union which in turn helps the member. And unlike a Corporations political contributions if a member of the Union does not like where their due's money is being spent they can go to a Union meeting and voice their concern. Hell they can even vote who gets placed on the executive board that makes these decisions. Like to see any of that happen in a corporation. As far as diminished Union membership in corporate America (Caryn) it has a lot more to do with the efforts of Corporate America convincing a lot of Americans that it is best to go without unions. That and the "right to work" legislation that has passed in a lot of states. Well after 40 years look at whats happened. The rich got super rich and the middle class is being swindled away.
Caryn it seems you have a selective interpretation of the 14th Amendment. With that being said it would seem this is a bad choice by Berkeley's school board in the first place. Knowing that Berkeley is a very progressive city it isn't wise to have a man who is so anti-gay/homosexual leading a school district which is pro-gay/homosexual. (really being pro-gay in this context means that they should have the same protections under the law that everyone else enjoys). To argue that is arguing to be on the wrong side of history.
Re: “Throwing More Money at Police”
Ed while you make a lot of points about the author you really don't address what the substance of his reporting has sussed out. Which is OPD IS mismanaged. There is a lot of room for cost savings. And nothing is being done about it. I live and pay taxes in Oakland. I would like for the OPD to be more effective but that doesn't mean throwing money at a failed system
