Dear Mike Hardtesty,
Ayn Rand was a psychopath, and it sounds like you are too. As in "inability to form human attachment and an abnormal lack of empathy, masked by an ability to appear outwardly normal."
Many of the refugees that these programs serve are fleeing from humanitarian atrocities that are hard for cushy Americans to fathom. There are hundreds of refugees in this city who came from Burma (Myanmar) for instance, where one of the top three most brutal dictators and his army have engaged in the longest civil wars in the history of the planet, using rape, mutilation, murder, forced labor (slavery) and arson (burning down entire villages) as a weapon of war. I think he is undoubtedly also a psychopath, though perhaps at a different level. But if you think you have no connection to this or to them, you might not know that the companies you buy your gas from do business with this regime. Every time you fill up your tank, you are likely contributing to something like this there, or in Africa, or the middle east, or whereever.
There are over 1 million Burmese displaced inside Burma and hundreds of thousands of Burmese refugees outside in refugee camps or being resettled in places like Oakland. Like you, these people are not perfect, but they want to learn English so they can start over here, get a job, get off welfare, help their kids learn in school, and make a better life. So you get off it.
