Re: “Oakland Police Union Spending Thousands on Effort to Unseat Councilmembers Kalb and Gallo

"I’ve generally been pro-police in terms of building up size of the force, wanting to pay them good wages and give them a good benefits package, and I took lead trying to get more crime investigators," Kalb told the Express. So-cops are only against Kalb b/c he supports more oversight. Kalb just got my vote.

Re: “For Nadia Lockyer, Recovery Could Take a Long Time

Thank you Martha for the detailed and thoughtful reply. You nailed it when you said 12-step programs work for the people who are receptive to them. For others who struggle with the AA approach, Lifering offers exactly the habit-changing support you describe in your reply. The Lifering workbook helps create an individual behavior-based recovery plan, and the meetings offer supportive fellowship. The neuroscience studies you mention point towards sobriety fellowship itself as effective, irrespective of the idiology behind that fellowship. AA, Lifering, Women for Sobriety, etc,-thankfully people have a smattering of equally-valid choices when they decide to stop using/drinking.

Re: “For Nadia Lockyer, Recovery Could Take a Long Time

Thank you for mentioning Lifering. Research shows that there is no "one size fits all" approach to recovery. Not everyone believes addiction is a "disease" and that addicts are "powerless". Enlightened treatment facilities like John Muir and MPI offer both AA AND secular non-12-step alternatives such as Lifering to fill out the sobriety "toolbox".

Re: “UC Berkeley Professor Proves He’s an Academic Fraud — Again

I love how it irks the Berkeley "progressives" that not every UC professor is a wacko lefty whining about pro-lifers, greedy corporations and/or grass-fed beef. As counsel it was HIS JOB to point out the relevant legal arguments to the Bush Administration. God forbid a professor have a contrary-or even slightly interesting-position to expose students to. I DEMAND that every law professor be pro-life, pro-environment and pro-socialism. Who is with me, Comrads?
