If my employees need a union to protect themselves from me, then there is something horribly wrong with my company.
If my employees need collective bargaining to ensure job security and assignments, then they probably lack initiative and aren't the kind of employees I want anyway.
There is a time and a place for unions- for example, the IBEW ensures PG&E has a ready pool of skilled labor when they have periods of high demand, and in return those who do extra dangerous jobs (lineman) are well-represented.
But clerks do not need a union. They have neither specialized skills nor does the adversarial position a union brings benefit them vis-a-vis management. They'd be better off dumping their dues into a 401k, or spending that money on a vacation.
