Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
@ lyingtogetyourway: - What are the 5 dog "parks" you mention? Dog owners LEAVE Oakland to access a decent dog park. There is San Joaquin way up in the hills, that has been closed a lot recently and Hardy, a postage stamp of a "park" that is practically in Berkeley and UNDER the freeway with cement ground. And scary (wanna feel like maybe you will get mugged or worse? Go there alone!). You obviously have not visited these dog "parks" if you think that they are adequate AND if these were childrens' parks, there would be major protests! This is all about diversity: dog owner have rights, pay taxes and are part of the Oakland community and our services are poorly under-represented. I base my vote on politicians that are dog-friendly - we do have a bit of power!
Lastly, we have ODOG that HAS been trying to have the laws and prejudice against dog owners changed...
And...if the City of Oakland can build a million$ "Putting Green" at Raimondi Park in West Oakland that NO ONE has EVER been seen using (actually, I have seen a few syringes laying around on the ground there, so maybe there is some use to the park), then they can give a few feet for our dogs to play!
Oakland government officials (and park naysayers), need to understand what a dog park will do for Oakland business in the area: Currently, dog owners leave to go Alameda, Albany or Berkeley and walk their dogs. And then, that is where we spend our $$$: on lunch, on groceries and other business near the dog parks in those cities.
Also, we need to move forward and get over the prejudices that have been long built into the minds of Oakland residents regarding dogs. Dogs are are seen by many, as vicious and not as 'pets' that are part of the family. I own a home in W. Oakland and nearly everyone on my block has a PET DOG(s). My 15 y/o dog is a family member.
Oakland is possibly one of the least dog-friendly cities in the US! Let's move out of the dark ages Oakland!!!
