Re: “Young, Poor, Invisible

There's always the military, the opportunity to be in public service and serve your country.

Re: “Vegan Filipino Cuisine Comes to Downtown Oakland

Very little is know about Ilocano cuisine, from the northern region of the Philippines. This is healthy fare, mostly boiled, grilled or steamed veggies with seafood. I know of only one such restaurant (Kambingan) and that is in Waipahu, (Oahu) in Hawaii.

Re: “Roots Revisited

I'm also a fresh transplant in the East Bay and I'm so impressed at the array of public land and parks available for recreational exploring.

For the most part, I have also noticed some urbanites here lack the appreciation of their proximity and access to the vast East Bay coastline, where in some parts of the country, there are those in the inner cities do not have such privileges and opportunities.

Re: “Is Oakland Animal Services Killing Too Many Dogs?

To add to my previous comment, I would think that since that Oakland Shelter is overrun with pitbulls, why not put them to work? If Oakland Police Department (and surrounding cities) or private security agencies are outfitted with law enforcement pit bulls instead of paying thousands of dollars to import and train purebred "guard" breeds, it may just curb our crime statistics and be an effective deterrent. Criminals would think twice dealing about messin' with po-po with a PD K-9 that can easily break their bones with one bite. Oakland PD and surrounding cities would get great PR using a local resource and save taxpayer money. This can be a win-win situation. Again, this is just a suggestion to solve this problem.

Re: “Is Oakland Animal Services Killing Too Many Dogs?

Why isn't the Oakland shelter partnering with law enforcement agencies to screen potential animals for law enforcement or search and rescue work? The Pacific Northwest is doing that. Put these animals to work if they are "ball crazy" which is the desired trait for drug-sniffing and bomb-sniffing dogs our law enforcement pay lots of money to breeders and trainers.
