Re: “Surfing Coffee's "Third Wave"

on the east bay, one of my favorite coffee shops (hands-down) is Modern Coffee located on 13th street on downtown Oakland, in the historic Tribune building. The co-owners of Modern combine to have over 25 years of experience in the specialty coffee industry. More importantly, they provide a welcoming, open and honest approach to serving excellent coffee and sharing coffee knowledge with customers.

in general, when evaluating the quality of a coffee shop, it can be very helpful to look beyond all the shiny machines, esoteric flavor descriptions and tatoo-laden employees and ask yourself a few questions:

1) does the coffee you drink taste good to you. meaning, was it really worth the money you just spent?
2) did the person behind the counter have a genuine connectioin to the product that was just served to you, and to the steps involved in getting it into your cup?
3) and do you feel comfortable asking any question about coffee, without fear of being judged or assaulted with attitude, in the form of sophisticated, quality-focused, purist mentality.

I am all for the best quality coffee available, dispite the roast degree (as long as it is not 'pan-seered'), but i'll take mine black, with just a side of hipster-coolness.
