Re: “I am Annoyed and Disappointed

Hello. My name is Zuriel. I am the General Manager of Cafe Gratitude in San Francisco. This story feels misleading and does not paint an accurate picture of the culture of Cafe Gratitude. Yes...we are strongly encouraged to check out Landmark. We are also encouraged to reach out to our mothers, to take care of our bodies, to not speak or think negatively of ourselves or others. Not such bad encouragement from the workplace. A blessing, actually. And as for a homogenized culture where only certain beliefs are tolerated? Nothing could be further from the truth. The company employs people of all religious backrounds, personal beliefs, sexual orientations and of varied personal self expression. I myself used to come to work wearing eye make-up! The whole reason I have stayed with Gratitude for four years and will continue to stay, is for the unique opportunity to fully BE MYSELF. It is quite the opposite environment than the East Bay Express attempts to portray. Matthew and Terces actually share with us how it takes some effort for them to adjust to some of OUR more radical beliefs, expressions and choices. Landmark and Cafe Gratitude don't preach ANY belief system, if you really look at them. My experience with both is that they are saying fundamentily it is our perspective that shapes and colors in our experience of Life. And with some effort and practice we can learn to master ourselves and be empowered to CHOOSE our perspective and our experience. It is simply about waking up and being at choice.
THere are a few employees who don't fully get what is being offered. We can all feel threatened when we are invited to let go of the way we see things. It is very human to IDENTIFY with our thoughts and beliefs. But the vast majority of the company's employees are thrilled to work for a company where we don't speak negatively of each other, we are encouraged to be our best, we learn to be liberated from old thought patterns that no longer serve us and where we are partiicipating in offering our community nourishment for the mind, body and soul.
Thank you.
