Re: “Radically Sharing Temescal

Great write up, thanks for the attention. It's a wonderful group of people and they encourage people to come check out the space. What this group particularly needs are more people of color, so please come by and get involved.

Re: “Alcohol and First Fridays

So let me get this straight. We close down a dozen blocks, open up the hottest art venues in town, put up too many stages to count rocking everything from funk to pop-rock, pack the streets with food trucks, have hella vendors all over the place... on a Friday Night... and the City officials want to "de-emphasize the party aspect of First Fridays". OK! I will never understand peoples hard-ons for frivolous regulation. Heres a bold idea: Arrest those who are Publicly Intoxicated and have some modicum of responsibility for yourself and your friends. Or better yet more Bounce Houses and lolly pops.

Re: “Ultra-Safe Bike Parking Gains Popularity

How much are security guard per shift? Or just fencing off a portion of the bike area and having a valet rather than a security guard. I tip when at a free valet. I dont think the only solution to the problem is hundreds of private lockers, they take up too much space for their variable usage. The bike areas have cameras anyway, why cant I check in on my bike by looking at a streaming video- is there an app for that- say with a "holy shit someone is stealing my bike" button that notifies the station's security?! Or a notification you can send to everyone that is registered in that station... "Gentlemen with a carjack two front wheels, a seat post and shopping cart." All I'm getting at is 3k/unit plus upkeep and revenue may be alternatively spend on a diversification of solutions.

Re: “Can Corporations B Beneficial?

This is the first I have herd of B Corporations. Thank you for the article and thanks to Oakland's Wendel Rosen law firm for spearheading the law. I wonder what the costs of transforming an existing corporate structure into a B-Corp might add up to, maybe Patagonia can share their experience. Seems to me there is an opportunity to create a "third-party" evaluation company that would hopefully develop a respectable reputation among the B-corp community.

Re: “How the Black Bloc Occupied Oakland

The presence of undercover cops and government agents infiltrating and rising to the upper echelon of fringe groups is STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE and has been at least since Hoover in the US. The surprise/betrayal that folks feel is indicative of their woeful ignorance of progressive social movements.

Thank you Piero for your synopsis, articulate and well structured. In particular I enjoyed the critique of the BB's perception of their actions. "some vanguard movement bringing revolution to Oakland is so far out of the realm of reality that it makes your entire effort here a shameful exercise in comedic role playing"

The knee-jerk reaction by most people that hear about the BB's actions is to label them as Anarchists, when in reality there testosterone fueled juveniles that look at the Occ movement as a festival of anonymity.

The philosophical chasm here is glaringly obvious: those who know their actions have direct consequences, and those who don't. Which has a larger effect, breaking every window at every TBTF bank all across the country, or starting/supporting local movements? Oaklanders have been fighting for civil rights-liberties, legislative-prison-tax-and education reform, trying to put an end to police brutality, homelessness and hunger for decades, and most recently legislatively addressing the mortgage crisis. The Occupy movement is just catching on but certainly deserves to be commended for raising the level of awareness about these issues and others in the putrid panoply. Thank you for the valuable discussion, may it healthfully continue.

Re: “Jerry, Barack, and the GOP

Our two party system is GREAT! How can you not LOVE a system that convinces the vast majority of Americans to vote on issues like gay marriage, abortion, religion in schools, or taxes (thats right taxes are either all good or all bad, dont think about it). All the while there is ZERO discussion on the silly trivial issues like, i dont know lets say, foreign occupations, Corporate subsidies, continual governmental bailouts, the Federal Reserve's systematic rape of wage workers (unemployment is up due to protectionist monetary policies that help large borrowers and hurt smaller job creating local businesses via double standard reserve % requirements- dont have time to go into it here but do some gd research), devaluation of the dollar and foreign aid... to name a few. The fact is that the dems have moved way to the "right" and the GOP is literally unrecognizable to its former self. THEY ARE THE SAME THING AND THEY HAVE CONVINCED US THAT THEY ARE POLAR OPPOSITES!

This post is drawing out too much... Do some research on Ron Paul, read a book or two, and register as a Republican in CA to vote in the primary election, you can narrow the field of douches on the republican side and come on, no democrat is a legitimate threat to Obama's reelection (I sincerely doubt the powers that be will allow Dr. Paul on the ticket though). And to be clear registering as a dem or repub ONLY effects the primary.
