Re: “Video Undermines Police "Probe" of Kaplan and Quan

Oh please this is what Jean Quan links on her website- I have no idea what it shows her doing that is positive- I do hear the police announcing an unlawful assembly. I think Ms. Quan is trying to get people to form a line to obstruct police but I can't be sure if that is what she is doing or she does it. I do hear Ms. Kaplan talking like a second grade teacher - she just lost my vote even though I did applaud her for speaking out against that silly BART airport extension- the article calls the person an anarchist- how does the writer know this- maybe he's just a regular old miscreant trouble maker. What bothers me is not the silly story but that Jean Quan thinks it important enough to link from her "newsletter" to show she's doing something "important." I think not Ms. Quan. I think Quan is hardly working for your neighborhood and who will hardly be working for your city if elected mayor, shudder the thought. I don't care if she walked in support of Oscar Grant (another miscreant- who shouldn't have been shot- but he should have behaved himself and if he did he may not be dead- really a tragedy- or against the BART Police or why she was out this night I'd like to know if she voted on any city worker raises in the past years, gave pension goodies so rich it makes chocolate mousse look like a diet dessert, did she reform any departments and get rid of city workers?, Make city government more transparent, effective and responsible to/for the taxpayer?, make OAK government stick to the letter and intent of bond measures, implore fiscal reality/discipline from city government- these are what matter to me, Ms. quan.

Re: “Recycling and Anxiety in Berkeley

It is theft plain & simple. I think Waste Management must pursue this because it is theft from them as they own the bins not you- it is their property. Len Tillem had a case on yesterday where someone took 6 oranges from a tree in a lot, police apprehended and charged alleged thief with theft. Len said that 1000 yrs ago if you did this they simply would have hanged you by the neck for stealing. Of course there is moral degradation, it starts this way and escalates and cops do nothing, and they do nothing if your car gets broken in to or your house (in Oakland at least.) In fact you just report the crime online and never actually deal with a human cop. Even if you have evidence they don't want to know about it, they don't want to process it. Of course this could easily be stopped if the fines were higher and confiscation of the auto became an issue. Now if you want to let someone other than WM to have your recyclables just put it in your own bin on the sidewalk. We have an agressive theif in our neighborhood who travels with a pit bull off leash- I say hang them both by their puny balls.

Re: “Monica's Victims

Interesting...please do an investigative piece on prevailing wage labor laws, practices, costs. It seems to me that at the begining of the article you say Lau is a qualified electrician and then you say that the concept of prevailing wage laws was to "weed out substandard work." It appears that you are getting the same work and same workman exactly in this situation.

Also interesting are the public agencies who are out to lunch regarding supervision of the contracts. Why bother having agencies supervise these in regard to wage and labor laws - they should be concentrating on are the drawings correct and is the work being done according to the drawings/specs- bottom line are the buildings safe- I don't think there's any guaranty that if you pay a worker more you are getting better work. I think Bernie Madoff proves this point- people were paying him a lot of money to manage their money, nuff said.

Re: “Unhappy New Year

How do we stick lipstick on the pig, Dellums, and get Obama to take him off our hands? Didn't Dellums back Clinton- why on earth would Obama take him (but please do) especially after his sorry spectacle of running Oakland (and after a less than illustrious career in Congress and an even more dismal one as a lobbyist) - a city that has only moved up in one ranking that is crime. Obama just doesn't seem that dumb.
