Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
What fizzling out regarding San Jose? The SJ ballpark was never on the May owners meeting agenda. Heck they've only been talking about it for 3 months since Selig put San Jose "on the front burner." And that was before the San Diego ownership situation when nuts. Selig will make up his mind in due time but right now he's still negotiating with the Giants and A's in closed session. Only thing that has changed recently is a slew of desperate "letter to the editor" please in east bay papers the last two days after a fluff PR stunt with Clorox and Quan. Nothing more. Oakland's ballpark "plan" remains nothing but smoke and mirrors.
What subsidies? If you're refering to infrastructure, that would be required no matter what is built on the land in question. Stadium, homes, businesses, they all require power, water, fire, police coverage. And that land isn't going to lay fallow forever, something will be built there eventually.
A's definitely need a new park. And the stadium in Fremont appears to be the best deal out there. It's being built with private money and is in a largely unused section of the city across 880. As for schools, a school is being included in the plan, as is adequate parking for the stadium. The only real issue is "traffic" and even that isn't as bad as Morrison makes it out to be. 880 will be completing a major expansion this year right at the ballpark site along with the BART extension to Warm Springs ramping up construction soon. Fremont would be nuts to pass this up. It's not often team owners offer to build ballparks without asking the city for funds.
