Re: “Bill Lockyer's Million Dollar Baby

I have met with and lobbied in the offices of both Bill Lockyer as well as Liz Figueroa, in the past. I like and respect both of them. It is sad that since Bill and Liz were an item, now Bill is helping his wife Nadia try to beat Liz. I hope that Liz manages to somehow win, as she does in fact have more heart in caring for, as the article says, nearly the same exact geographic area that she served in as a State Assemblymember and then again as a State Senator.

Re: “25 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Vote for Don Perata

I've known Don Perata for forty years from my days in Alameda. He is a good, honest, ethical person, who truly cares about Oakland. The consultant who the Coliseum Commission hired was the reason for the Raiders debacle, as fans bought multiple lottery tickets in order to buy season tickets, but the fine print said they'd have to buy all the tickets if more than one of their lottery tickets was chosen. The best part is Perata will ban guns in Oakland.

Re: “Don Perata Can Buy Oakland Mayor's Race

Perata will be the best thing for Oakland since Jerry Brown - probably even better. He has the guts to challenge the laws regarding guns. He has the ideas to start up economic revitalization again. He has the know how to fix the problems which Dellums ignored. I have never been a resident of nor a voter in Oakland, nor have I ever been a campaign contributor of Perata's. But, I know him from my Alameda days, and know him to be an ethical man.

Re: “Alameda Schools Face Grim Future

Simple: Prop. 13 in 1978 cut most of the money communities received. This included money for schools, roads, hospital, police, and fire, to name but a few basic services. While the freeze of residential property taxes should remain under Prop. 13, the freeze of commercial property taxes should not remain under Prop. 13. The other shoe dropped in 2003, when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger cut the VLF (Veh. Lic. Fee/car tax) from 2% to 0.65%. No $.

Re: “A's Fan Ejected for Heckling Lew Wolff

Gone from the East Bay almost thirteen years, and I still love my A's, Raiders, Warriors, and Cal Bears. I, too, grew up in the '60s, 70's, and 80's with my Oakland A's. I have also been fighting to keep them out of Fremont. Let the Giants have San Jose. All Lew has to do is see the ad campaign from a few years ago: The A's belong in Oakland. There is no Oakland without the A's. Desperate times call for desperate measures, Jorge. Do what you must, sir.

The Central Coast has better Pinot Noirs. Didn't you see the film "Sideways"?! :)

Re: “Dellums Fails to Pay at Least $239,000 in Taxes

Prop. 103 said (says) that Auto insurance rates in CA must be based on 19 factors. The top 3 factors, in order, are REM: record, experience, and mileage. Zip is the #4 factor of choice for most companies. Other factors include age, sex, marital status, type (value and repair cost) of vehicle you drive, etc. 103 also says that property & casualty insurers cannot directly share information. They got around that by forming CLUE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) a database run by LexisNexis
under the brand name of ChoicePoint. So they can still share info indirectly v directly
103 also says that the Insurance Commissioner must be elected, not appointed by the Gov. 103 says a lot of things, none of which may be altered, but Mercury's trying. No coincidence that they are committing a lot of contributions to Insurance Comm. Steve Poizner's bid for CA Gov. Mercury has low rates. Their market share is growing. They are based in LA. If your kid is one day old, they want to know his SSN
so they can charge for him as a driver the day he turns 16. I hate Mercury Insurance.
