I like the Van Hools.

They are much quieter and cleaner than the old buses. Especially the new shorter ones on the 67 Line. The ride is much better than the tiny vans they had on that route.

In reference to the article, AC Transit seemed to have made the modifications with the shorter buses with more ground level seating.

AC Transit is in much better shape financially today than it was in the 1970's, 80's and 90's. Moreover, AC Transit has done very well in obtaining operating grants to fund for all night buses, access to work service and supplemental school service for East Bay youth.

Without these services many passengers may not have access to jobs and education.

The majority of transit buses in the United States purchased under the "Buy America" provisions are manufactured by foriegn owned companies and imported from abroad.

New Flyer, Motor Coach Industries, Nova and Orion (Diamler-Benz) buses are manufactured in Canada and assembled over the border in Minnesota, North Dakota and New York respectively to meet the Buy America provisions.

North American Bus Industries (NABI) , a Hungarian owned firm that produces BRT buses for Los Angeles, are built in Europe and shipped to Alabama for final assembly taking advantage of tax breaks and low wages.

The majority of San Francisco's Muni's fleet are imported as well. Its trolley buses are made in the Czech Republic. It's streetcars are made in Italy and the latest hybrid buses are imported from Canada.

Even Hayward based Gillig is not completely 100% American since many of its bus parts and subcomponents are manufactured and imported from abroad. Ironically enough Gillig took liberties in replicating the Van Hool front end design and imports the front end windshield from the same Van Hool supplier in Europe.

Why single out AC Transit when the practice of importing buses is the norm for most transit agencies?
